In 1993, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the USA formed a partnership with Hospital Bloom in El Salvador, to share knowledge and personnel, provide resources and help Hospital Bloom plan for a sustained future.
Before 1993, less than 40% of leukaemia patients admitted to Hospital Bloom in El Salvador completed their treatment – and virtually none survived. Now, following the success of the twinning program with St. Jude, 90% of patients complete treatment and more than 50% survive. What’s more, whereas 90% of the program was initially funded by St. Jude, now 90% is funded locally.
