The launch of the World Child Cancer Foundation at the joint Annual Conference of ICCCPO/SIOP (the International Society of Paediatric Oncology) in Geneva, Switzerland in September 2006.
Professor R. Maarten Egeler, M.D., Ph.D., President-elect SIOP, commented “Childhood cancer treatment is the success story of the past generation with more than 75% of all children with cancer cured of their disease. However, this figure only applies to children in high income countries, whereas some 80% of all children with cancer live in countries that do not have access to these treatments. SIOP and its members have supported programs in low income countries for many years aiming to bridge this gap. The initiative of setting up a permament World Child Cancer Foundation whose sole purpose is to address this issue is one that we from SIOP welcome and support wholeheartedly.”
